Lately it feels as if we’re living in some kind of alternate universe, what with the rampant spewing of alternative facts and completely unhinged daily Twitter tantrum’s from our southern neighbour’s newly inaugurated president.
On Saturday evening, things got even more bizarre in bizarro world. Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney sang When Irish Eyes Are Smiling to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Yes, you read that right.
The former Progress Conservative prime minister received a standing ovation from attendees watching his seemingly impromptu performance during a cancer benefit at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
During the benefit, a fundraiser for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Mulroney and his wife Mila sat at the head table with the President and First Lady Melania Trump.
Mulroney was invited on stage by Canadian songwriter and composer David Foster, who was the entertainment for the evening.
Mulroney sang the same song with former President Ronald Reagan back in 1985 before the pair signed the Canada-U.S. free-trade deal in Quebec City, cementing relations between the two countries.
Taking the microphone from Foster, Mulroney joked:
“Mr. President, I hope this doesn’t wreck Canada-U.S. relations for decades to come.”
Mulroney currently serves as Prime Minister Trudeau’s unofficial emissary to the United States, despite having different political ideologies.
